“Little village, yes we are! We specialize in big hearts,” said the town crier.
“Welcome visitors. We love new people.
We hope you’ll stay a while. How did you find us?
You’re on a day trip from the castle. Which castle?”
Bear pointed to Amy. She stood a distance away.
“It’s her castle. Her name is Amy,” said Bear.
“My name is Ben. I’m the town crier… I announce all the news and important changes.
We’re very active. So I need to keep my voice in good shape… he drank a clear liquid.
This is our spring water. We’re in the process of analyzing the quality… we want to sell it outside the village.
Would you like a drink of our special water? It’s the best I’ve ever tasted.
Soon you’ll meet the people from the top of the village. Today’s the day they come down to the village square.
“Here they come. See them hike slowly down the path from their hill top home.
I’ll introduce you. They’re special.
They visited the village one day about 20 years ago. They roamed the world for many years… looked for a place like the village.
The house at the top of the hill was for rent. They rented it… fell in love with the village.
Negotiated with the owner. Bought the house… overlooked the village since.
Once a week they visit the village. Thrill us with the stories of their worldwide travels.
Tom and Pam I’d like you to meet Amy and Bear. They’re new here… arrived earlier today.
I need to leave. Go about my business of being town crier… Tom and Pam will entertain you.
Tom and Pam asked Amy and Bear to sit at the sidewalk cafe. They were thirsty after their hike down the mountain.
“Yes we’ll have something to drink… thank you,” Tom said to the waiter. “Their house specials are delicious Amy and Bear… I recommend the vegetable pie.
Most everyone enjoys eating here. They are friendly, nice and clean.”
The waiter came back and took their food and drink order. The foursome now chatted freely.
“What brought you to our village Amy and Bear?” asked Tom. “Isn’t it lovely?
We decided to take a day hike from the castle,” said Amy. “It’s too nice to stay inside… all this sunshine and soft breezes.”
Tom’s ears perked up at the word castle. He listened intently… not saying a word.
“Amy and I wanted to visit the countryside around the castle. We didn’t even know you were here,” said Bear.
“Amy just inherited the castle and grounds from her adopted father. His brother gave it to him when he died.
He came out and took care of things. Then he died… so now the castle belongs to Amy.”
The waiter brought their drinks. He returned quickly with their food.
Everyone started to eat and drink. They were famished.
“So you must be Princess Amy?” asked Pam. “We heard the good news last week.
How kind you are to people. We heard about you many years ago from your adopted father and his brother.
Would you please come stay in our home? We’d like to show you some special items left by your father’s brother.
It’ll be no bother at all. We have two extra bedrooms no one uses… extra clothing too.
Please come home with us. We have some business here in the village… we’ll leave soon.
Please give us a bit of time to think your offer over. Can you check with us as you leave the village?” asked Amy.
Tom and Pam paid the bill on the table. They wouldn’t let Amy and Bear pay for anything.
“We’ll come back by on our way home,” Tom smiled. “We hope you come home with us.
“That’s quite a hike to the top of the mountain. We can do it,” said Bear.
“Yes, I want to go to the top. It looks so inviting,” said Amy.
Next thing they knew they were entering the front door to Tom and Pam’s home. They’d hiked a long way that day… it was now dark.
“You must be tired. Come with me,” Pam said.
Pam pointed to the room on the left, “Bear this is your room. Amy your room is across the hall on the right.
Everything you need is in your rooms. Good night… see you in the morning for breakfast.
If you wake up hungry in the night. Make yourself at home… raid the kitchen.
Our home is your home. Relax and enjoy your stay.
Amy, Bear, Tom and Pam finished the large breakfast fixed by Pam. The clean mountain air seemed to make them extra hungry.
“I don’t remember the last time I’ve eaten so well. Your cooking is delicious Pam,” said Amy.
I leave fresh fruit on the table. Feel free to help yourself anytime.
I’d like to show you what your father’s brother enjoyed so much. He used to come out a lot… we miss him.
We hope to see you as much as we saw him. Pam opened a door, “This was his art studio.
He loved to work in solitude. We’d see him for meals… or sometimes he would just stay and chat for hours with us.
Look at all these art supplies. He eventually seemed to bring everything here.
His favorites were these.” Pam pointed to chalk and pastels. “He used them more than any others.
We’ve left his studio just the way he did. I come in and dust so it is clean.
Maybe you and Bear would like to spend some time here. I’ll come back and tell you when lunch is ready.”
Pam walked out… closed the studio door. She smiled to herself… she knew they would be enchanted by the studio.
Amy and Bear were curious about the art studio. They cautiously looked at everything and put it back in it’s place.
“Look at these paintings,” Amy squealed. “He used all kinds of paints.
Wish I had known him. Guess I will by looking at his paintings.
Bear what have you found?” Amy turned to see Bear sitting in a large chair with his feet up.
“I am surrendering myself to the moment. Thinking about what I’ll paint next.
You silly goose. You’re not a painter.
“As a man thinketh so is he. I’m focusing my mind on being a great painter like the master whose paintings we see.
Perfect practice prevents poor performance. I can do this… it is a matter of time… what a lovely way to spend my life.
Princess Amy you can go back to the castle. Me… I’m staying here with Tom and Pam… creating a whole new life and world for myself.”
Bear walked over to the window. He jiggled the window latch… the window opened.
Fresh air and sunshine poured inside the art studio. Gentle breezes ruffled the art paper.
Amy turned to Bear, “This is a world I want to inhabit also. How can we both be in the same place?”
What will Amy and Bear do? Will Princess Amy return to the castle?
With or without Bear?
BearHugs ’til our next adventure,
Amy & Bear
