“Sleepy bear, it’s that season again.” Bear walked slowly towards his cave, “I’m so tired.”
Bear’s footprints not seen as they disappeared, lost, in the white snow, “Oops, I’m a sleepy bear”… he tripped over the deep ski tracks in the snow. “How do I go on?”
“Sleepy bear, sleepy bear,” that’s all his Bear brain could think. “I know I need to change my thinking to ‘bouncy bear, bouncy bear’… those thoughts will give me energy to go on.
As a man thinks so is he. Must be the same for bears,” thought sleepy bear.
“Around the mountain I come,” said sleepy bear “up the mountain and through the woods. Yes, I will make it as the mail does… through rain, sleet, hail or snow… sleepy bear always goes on.
Little Red Bird
Hello pretty red bird! From where do you come?” asked Bear.
“I flew over from the valley. I heard you falling in the snow… thought I would keep you company.
Would you like company sleepy bear?” asked the red bird. “Please say yes… I am lonely too.
“It’s the season to be with family and friends sleepy bear,” said the red bird. “I don’t know where my family is so I need friends as my family.
Will you be my friend?” said the red bird. “If you are my friend then will you be my family?”
Bear was thinking to himself I am glad he is friendly. “However a sleepy bear and a red bird? How would this work out as a friendship?”
Bear wasn’t sure about this friendship at all. He could step on the little bird and squash him.
“Oh what to do! I need a friend… I am so alone.
I promise you red bird to be the best friend I can be. I am so lonely.
Medal of Honor
Red bird we can try. Do you know how to ski?” asked sleepy bear.
“Sleepy bear I’ve watched skiing… I don’t ski. I can try and give you some tips… maybe I could sit on your shoulder… whisper in your ear,” said red bird.
“I could whisper ‘Do It Now’! So when you ski black diamonds… the dangerous ski runs… you won’t quit.
Red bird you deserve a special medal of honor. Thank you for ‘Do It Now’ so I won’t quit,” said Bear.
Bear twitched his nose…. to his surprise like magic a special medal of honor appeared… nothing like this happened when he twitched his nose before! Birds were carrying the medal of honor.
“Red bird we can try this ‘Do It Now’… especially in the black diamond ski runs… right now I am going to slip on my skis.” Bear carried his skis over his shoulder… they were brand new as bear had just bought them.
Bear was doing his best to get back home. When he left his cave it was fall… there was no snow.
He had never seen this white stuff before. Bear had always hibernated… he had slept through the cold snowy season.
“What I really want now is sleep,” said sleepy bear. “This snow is cold… not my kind of weather” sleepy bear brushed falling snow off his shoulders.
“Funny… I hear a slight noise. Once again it is a small bell… why?” Bear asked himself outloud.
Shuush, Shuush, Shuush…
“Shuush, Shuush, Shuush…” were the sounds as the skis slid… almost silently over the snow. Red bird sat on sleepy bear’s shoulder a brilliant red speck in the white wonderland.
“Where are we going?” asked red bird. Red bird snuggled into sleepy bear‘s fur… it was cold.
“We are skiing towards the mountains. My cave is there,” said sleepy bear.
“It’s a long way to ski. I am so tired… need to remember to think bouncy bear… so we get there safely.
Please remind me to think and say bouncy bear. Thank you beautiful red bird, my friend.
Do it now bouncy bear!” said red bird. “Did you hear me ‘tweet’ Do It Now in your ear?”
Sleepy bear‘s step picked up dramatically. He was actually bouncing!
“What an amazing friend you are red bird. Thanks for ‘tweeting’ in my ear!”
Sleepy bear bounced so much his skis left the ground. “Wow… extreme air time!” said sleepy bear.
He felt like a new bear… bouncy new bear. He needed control of his skis… so they didn’t launch.
“Olympic skiing is not on the menu yet. Thinking ‘menu’… ‘launch’… makes me hungry.
Red bird you have a bird’s eye view. What do you see for ‘launch’?”
Frozen Red Berries!
Red bird spun his head around 360 degrees. Beautiful red berries came into his view.
“Do you eat berries?” red bird asked sleepy bear. “There are brilliant red berries… sparkling in the white winter land.”
Sleepy bear asked, “Which direction? I need time to turn my skis around.
I’ll bring the berries to you,” said red bird. “Flying is quicker than skiing.
One berry at a time to eat… not satisfying. It’ll increase my hunger,” said sleepy bear.
Red bird said, “Don’t worry. I’ve been a hunter all of my life.
That’s great,” said sleepy bear. “I want to help too… point me in the direction of the berries.
Over there,” tweeted red bird. “You ski and I’ll fly… the berries will be ours in no time.
Bear berries,” tweeted red bird. “Bear berries… bouncy bear!
We can have a business. Bear berries… bouncy bear… your photo as a testimony… gives bears energy… so they aren’t sleepy… we’ll be millionaires!
Those are all great words,” said sleepy bear. “I haven’t eaten any berries yet… where are they?” growled sleepy bear.
“Soon my dear sleepy bear. Thoughts are the foundation of our dreams… as a man thinks so is he,” said red bird.
“I’m hungry, I’m sleepy and getting grouchier because of you red bird,” said sleepy bear.
Sleepy bear had his eyes on the red bird. “Wonder what red bird meat tastes like?” thought sleepy bear to himself.
“We need berries now,” said red bird. “I need to ask my forest friends for help.”
Red bird didn’t want sleepy bear getting any ideas about eating anything else. “Focus on eating beautiful red berries… and ‘schuusing’ your skis… slaloming in the Olympics,” he told sleepy bear.
“My forest friends are willing to help me. They’ve done it before,” said red bird.
“Mr. Deer please help me get all those berries.” Red bird pointed his wing in the direction of the luscious ripe red berries.
“Yes red bird I will help you. Do you have a way of catching them… they’ll roll all over the ground?”
Red bird said, “Let me think. Oh yes there is always a way!
Sleepy bear I need your bandana. It will be a safe way to capture all of the berries that Mr. Deer is thinking about.
Red bird all I hear is words… I see no action. I’m hungry… here is my bandana,” said sleepy bear.
“Mr. Deer has a way of catching all the berries. This is sleepy bear’s bandana.
Spread it over there… under that tree. I’m going to shake the tree… we will have berries galore for your bear.”
Mr. Deer body slammed the tree. The tree shook… beautiful luscious berries fell to the ground.
Red bird picked up all four corners of the bandana. He tried to pick it up to fly… it was too heavy for his small body.
“Eagles where are you?” asked red bird. “I need help.”
As soon as red bird uttered the words… eagles were at his side. They were sitting right next to him and the red berries.
“We need to fly these berries over to the bear over there. Be careful the bear is hungry, sleepy and grouchy.”
The eagles each picked up a corner of the bandana and followed red bird. Soon bear was eating red berries… they were all gone quicker than taking a breath… bear ate all of the berries.
What came next surprised everyone. Bear became a bouncy bear… bounced and skied over to a tree… he was on a black diamond ski run… the most dangerous ski run ever.
Bear had never skied in his whole entire life. He was heading straight down the mountain!
He wanted all of those berries! He could see the path he was on would land him in the top of the tree.
He knew this was dangerous. He was skiing straight down the mountain.
There was a slight upward curl to the mountain’s edge that would launch bear and red bird straight into the blue sky, white snow… maybe the tree top. It was a trajectory loaded with danger… more danger than skiing straight down the mountain.
Red bird was sitting on his shoulder twittering “Do It Now, Do It Now, and Do It Now!” Red bird’s feathers shook with fear.
Extreme Bear Hugs!
Bear bounced so hard he broke his skis. He ricocheted around the tree top… as he did bear ate the remaining red berries… went to sleep with a full belly… woke up with red bird still shaking on his shoulder… and a Santa Claus hat with a red scarf around his neck… and mistletoe!
Red bird said, “How did you get a Santa Claus hat and a red scarf? I want those too and a kiss!”
